I would like to focus on at least seven things (in the next 7 posts!) about horses that can be helpful to human growth and development. I’d like to start with the fact that horses are relational beings. So many of us in the natural horsemanship world like to focus on putting the “relationship first” when working with horses.

I have walked in to many a barn over the years and read a common sign over the tack room that reads, “My horse is my Therapist”. Maybe you have seen that sign as well! While people reading that may chuckle, the horse owners often resonate quite strongly with the idea that spending time with their horse(s) is helpful to them on an emotional level.

More and more the academic research is demonstrating that horses have the ability to help people in many ways. It has been known for quite a while now that riding has physically therapeutic benefits. What is more recent in the research is that time spent with horses, both on the ground and riding, has the potential to be mentally and emotionally therapeutic as well. That is what I am all about.
